The Beachcomber at Cahoon Hollow Beach in Wellfleet, MA on Cape Cod is by no means fine dining, but it is quintessential Cape Cod at its best! It sits atop an oceanfront bluff with incredible Atlantic Ocean views.
The atmosphere on the beach feels like something out of “Beach Blanket Bingo” — not that I actually saw the movie; it was a little before my time! I have seen snippets of the movie so I have an idea of what it was all about. The dune down to the beach is very high and there aren’t any stairs so you need to be steady on your feet to go up and down the dune to use the rest room in the restaurant. At the end of the day climbing back up the dune is well worth the trip for your first Pina Colada, Goombay Smash, beer – or whatever summer drink you crave after a day sunning yourself on the beach or surfing the waves! The food is actually good too! They have an incredible raw bar out in the open air bar area overlooking the ocean and a variety of salads, sandwiches, roll-ups and seafood platters. I recently had the panko-crusted haddock and it was absolutely delicious!
A couple of side notes — 1) When I was here in 1985, before dune preservation, people would alpine ski down the dunes. They are very steep. They have since formed the dunes into a sideways path in order to get down more easily. 2) The sign below is no joke. The seals literally swim a few feet from the shoreline with the people. I have the Sharktivity app and in the summertime I get at least one notification a day and it’s typically Head of the Meadow, Cahoon Hollow, Nauset or Lighthouse Beach among others along that stretch. Scary stuff!
Each summer I have to get my fix at least one time at The Beachcomber. It wouldn’t be summer without it!
